When the OXCART project was declassified in 2007, those who worked at Groom Lake were able to tell their stories, at least in part, and the descriptions of the OXCART craft explain some of the alleged UFO sightings. According to a 2009 article, “The shape of OXCART was unprecedented, with its wide, disk-like fuselage designed to carry vast quantities of fuel. Commercial pilots cruising over Nevada at dusk would look up and see the bottom of OXCART whiz by at 2,000-plus mph. The aircraft’s titanium body, moving as fast as a bullet, would reflect the sun’s rays in a way that could make anyone think, UFO.”2

The 2,850 test flights of the OXCART would certainly account for the multiple sightings of UFOs in the vicinity of Area 51.

The interviews also shed light on one of the common theories about Area 51: that there’s a vast underground complex hidden from view, its various parts connected by rail links. Special projects engineer Thornton Barnes told the Los Angeles Times that he worked on a nuclear-rocket program, called Project NERVA, inside underground chambers at Jackass Flats, in Area 51’s backyard. “Three test-cell facilities were connected by railroad, but everything else was underground,” he confirmed.

But there is testimony from people who claim that they worked on projects at Area 51 that don’t fit into the accepted descriptions. In 1989, a physicist named Bob Lazar claimed in a TV interview that he had worked at an area called S-4 (Sector Four) located near Groom Lake. S-4 was mentioned in one of the Majestic-12 documents, the “SOM 1-01 Extraterrestrial Entities and Technology, Recovery and Disposal” manual, as being part of Area 51. Lazar’s job was to reverse engineer extraterrestrial spaceships, to which he gave names such as “the top hat model, the jello mold and the sport model.” According to him, on the sport model, “[t]he bottom of it glowed blue and began to hiss like any, like high voltage does on a round sphere . . . and it lifted off the ground quietly except for that little hiss in the background, and that stopped as soon as it reached about twenty or thirty feet.” He claimed that “there’s no action reaction system to it. There’s no, like in a jet engine, exhaust gas being thrown out—no propeller, no noise. It’s just, for all intents and purposes, magic,” and he said he was going public about his work because, effectively, the world had a right to know.3

Lazar’s testimony, which he amplified to explain where the aliens came from and how time travel was involved, was challenged on multiple fronts. One site bluntly stated, “Lazar offers an interesting, intelligent, unverifiable story surrounded by lies.” His qualifications were investigated and found to be exaggerated, if not false. He claimed that the UFOs were powered using element 115, a transuranic, super-heavy metal, and that interstellar travel was “accomplished by generating an intense gravitational field and using that field to
